Maharashtra government rejects Pune Police's

May 19 : The Maharashtra government has put a damper on the requisition put forward by the Pune Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh for countering the terrorist menace in the city in the wake of 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Following the 26/11 terror attacks, the city police had sent 31 proposals to the state government asking for modern weapons and advanced equipment
. However, four of 31 proposals were rejected by the government. The Pune police had demanded portable X-ray machines, bulletproof vests, total containment vehicles and other sophisticated weapons, but their demands were not accepted by the government. The other 27 proposals are thus expected to suffer the same fate in the long run, some senior police officials said here today.

Last week, State Director General of Police S S Virk had placed order for modern weapons and other equipment in the international market.

Referring to the pending proposals of Pune police, he had stated they would give top priority for procuring weapons and were trying to resolve the issue with the state government.

But in a communication to Pune Police Commissionerate, a Home department official, Siddhartha Choure, stated that the government had rejected the four major proposals because they were submitted after the end of financial year on March 31.

About the containment vehicles, the letter stated that the government would have to spend crores of rupees and there is no emergency for getting such vehicles at present.

As far as the purchase of bulletproof vests are concerned they were not in the manual, he added.
